Lighthouse Jaipur researches the gambling market; we do not encourage anyone to gamble. If you choose to play where it is lawful for you to do so, these principles matter.
The baseline
- Gambling is entertainment with a cost, not a source of income.
- Never play with money you cannot afford to lose, and never chase losses.
- Set time and money limits before you start, not after.
- Gambling is for adults only (18+, and higher age thresholds apply in some Indian states).
The legal position in India
Online money games are prohibited nationwide under the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Act, 2025, in force since 1 May 2026. Land-based gambling is lawful only in a small number of jurisdictions (notably Goa and Sikkim) under state law. Check your state’s law before any form of play.
Warning signs
Gambling more than planned, hiding play from family, borrowing to play, and feeling restless when not playing are recognised warning signs of problem gambling.
Getting help
If gambling is causing you or someone close to you harm, talk to a mental-health professional. India’s national mental-health helpline Tele-MANAS (14416) provides free, confidential support around the clock.
