Gambling regulation in Assam

Assam's Game and Betting Act, 1970 is among the stricter state laws: it prohibits betting on games and offers no general skill-game exemption, which kept even fantasy-sport operators cautious here long before the federal ban. No casinos are licensed; state lotteries have operated under the 1998 framework. Across every state and union territory, online money games are prohibited nationwide by the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Act, 2025, in force since 1 May 2026 and enforced by the Online Gaming Authority of India.

Online money games are prohibited across India under the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Act, 2025, in force since 1 May 2026 — regardless of any historical state-level permissions. The notes above concern land-based and state-specific rules.

Regional gaming preferences

Tea-belt towns keep traditional dice and card play alive socially, but the legal environment pushed all real-money formats out early.

Popular sports & traditional games

Cricket and football share the stage; Assam is also a boxing and badminton nursery.

Payment infrastructure

UPI is established in Guwahati and spreading; rural cash reliance remains high.
