Gambling regulation in Tamil Nadu
Tamil Nadu pairs its old Gaming Act, 1930 with one of India's most aggressive modern statutes: the Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Online Gambling and Regulation of Online Games Act, 2022 (in force 2023), which bans online gambling and online play of real-money rummy and poker, and created a state Online Gaming Authority. The Act survived constitutional challenge in substantial part, and the state later added time-of-day and KYC regulations for permitted online games (litigation history: Needs Verification for the latest appellate position). Across every state and union territory, online money games are prohibited nationwide by the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Act, 2025, in force since 1 May 2026 and enforced by the Online Gaming Authority of India.

Cricket is massive (Chennai Super Kings), kabaddi has strong rural presence, and Tamil Nadu is one of Indian chess's power centres.
