The Unified Payments Interface, operated by NPCI, is the backbone of Indian digital payments: an instant, bank-to-bank rail addressed by virtual payment IDs and QR codes.

Adoption in India

UPI dominates Indian retail digital payments, processing billions of transactions a month across hundreds of banks and every major payments app (PhonePe, Google Pay, Paytm and others ride on it). It is the default way urban India pays for anything.

Supported deposits & withdrawals

Deposits: instant push payments via VPA or QR.
Withdrawals: instant bank credit where a counterparty supports payouts.

Payment processing characteristics

Instant settlement, 24×7, no card networks involved; transactions authenticate with a UPI PIN in the payer's own app.

Fees & limits

Typical costfree for consumers (P2P and most P2M)
Per-transaction capcommonly ₹1 lakh; higher caps apply to specific categories
Daily limitsset per bank and app

Availability and restrictions

UPI is infrastructure, not an app: this page covers the rail itself — Paytm, PhonePe and Google Pay are applications that use it. Legal note: since 1 May 2026 the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Act, 2025 prohibits online money games in India and bars financial facilitation of them, so Indian payment rails must not be assumed available for gambling transactions. We never claim gambling-payment availability for a method unless specifically verified.

Security & compliance

Two-factor authentication by design (device binding + UPI PIN); regulated by RBI and NPCI; fraud and chargeback handling follow NPCI dispute frameworks.

Listed because the operator declares support for this method in our records; availability for gambling-related payments is noted per review and is not implied here.

Frequently asked questions

Is UPI the same thing as Paytm or PhonePe?
No. UPI is the interbank rail operated by NPCI; Paytm and PhonePe are apps that use that rail (alongside their own wallets).
Can UPI be used for online gambling?
Online money games are banned in India since May 2026, and facilitating payments for them is prohibited — so no, not lawfully.
